Susan Delgado

He slept. And dreamed. II Susan Delgado, his beloved, was dying before his eyes. He watched, his arms held by two villagers on each side, his neck dog-caught in a huge, rusty iron collar.

Roland dreams the scene of Susan dying; this is an explicitly depicted dream, not a present-day return.

Named among the people Roland has described to Eddie.

Susan stops outside the witch’s hut in the narrated Mejis scene.

Roland’s account names Susan as his first and perhaps only love.

Eddie’s thought recalls Susan’s burning at the stake.

Roland sees the charred stake associated with Susan’s death.

Dreaming. Having a nightmare. Once, at the time he had met and fallen in love with Susan Delgado, he had known a witch named Rhea—the first real witch of Mid-World he had ever met.

Roland connects Rhea to Susan’s death in his remembered history.

I’d never again be so young as before I met Susan Delgado, and loved her, and lost her, but I was still too young to tell this boy that his father had been torn to pieces by a monster.

Roland recalls loving and losing Susan before this youthful adventure.
