Father Donald Callahan is a direct bridge from ’Salem’s Lot into Roland’s journey. The priest returns as Pere Callahan, with his earlier life and the events of the town carried into the Tower narrative. Pere is a title for the same man. Characters from his earlier story can also connect the books through his recollections without appearing in the Calla themselves.

Callahan’s discovery of a book attributed to Stephen King creates a connection within the story itself: he finds his own experiences in a novel. The writer then becomes someone Roland and Eddie encounter in Song of Susannah. This is the narrative’s depiction of King as a character, rather than an ordinary credit to the author.
