Roland’s account of Mejis gives fuller context to people remembered elsewhere in the series. Susan Delgado is his lost love, and Sheemie Ruiz is the boy he knew there. The final Tower novel explicitly recognizes Sheemie from that earlier history. These are connections through the characters’ lives, not new identities created because a later book retells the past.

The journey with Blaine continues from The Waste Lands, and Jake remembers Aaron Deepneau’s riddle during the challenge. The novel also depicts Roland confronting Marten Broadcloak, the reviewed identity linked to Walter and Randall Flagg. These threads connect the present journey, Roland’s past and Flagg’s appearances in other books.
